Question from Penny: Do you recommend highlights or dying hair? I want to go lighter (im a brunette right now) but I'm struggling with picking between doing highlights or dying my hair. I'm also not sure how it will look. Please help!

 

I'm so glad I can help you and that you asked this question because this happens to be a problem I faced for quite some time as well. I can't exactly tell you what to do nor can I make your decision for you but I do have a lot of advice I can give you. There are pros and cons of each decision so in order to help you see the benifits and doubts of doing each I'm going to list both for you.

 

Highlights:

 

Pros~

• Safter root as it can be less intense and you can switch back to your older color easier and or dye it back without having so much to cover.

• Less maintance- after you go 2 shades darker or lighter dying your hair becomes more difficult as soon as roots grow in its quite un-pleasent leaving you for an almost instant retouch

• Dimmention- With highlights you can get multiple tones put into your hair which can add dimmention and really help to bring more intrest to your hair. 

• You can go half or full head so you semi choose the intensity of the highlight

 

 

Cons~

• More expensive

• Harder to do at home

• More time consuming

 

 

 

Dying your hair:

 

 

Pros~

• Can do at home

• Less expensive

• Consumes less time

• All one color

 

Cons~

• Fades

• More maintence

• Harder to go back to original color

• Damaging to hair (more damaging because you often have to bleach it first but both are indeed damaging)

• No dimmention

 

 

 

 

 

There are many perks to both dying and highlighting your hair and dependent on your situstion one may be clearly better for you. There are indeed more posts and more pros and cons to both sides but I was sharing from both my commom knowledge, research from when I was still trying to decide, and other important factors. I recommend that if you are still un sure you look further into both areas and maybe make a list of what your trying to achieve and see which way makes your desired avalible. In the end I wound up choosing highlight for many of the reasons above and a few others. I couldn't be happier with my decision, I love the way it looks and I'm not someone who just has blonde stripes in her hair I get a heavy full head highlight done and when people look at me they do see a blonde. I think key to which ever road you decide to take is finding a good hairdresser or someone to do your hair that will do it the way you like. My hair color journey has definetly had a few bumps in the road between looking a fony white, and not having enough but after a few different dressers I finally found one that worked and above everything finding someone who can do what you want to your hair is most important.
